Filing – Life Made Easier

OK, I hate to break it to you but if you are serious about making money for yourself, either offline or online, you need to be organised and part of being organised is dealing with paperwork. This will involve filing.

Filing, a six letter word that strikes fear into the hearts of most people. Let’s face it, few people would choose to take up filing as a career and yet it is the cornerstone of any functioning office/business. Just think back to the last time you had to look for an invoice or a quote or even a catalogue. Where did you look? Did you open a drawer and pull out a stack of papers and rifle through them to find what you were looking for? Perhaps you pulled down a lever arch file and flicked through some tabbed dividers and opened it at the section you needed? Or if you were feeling pretty smug you opened your filing cabinet and went straight to the section you needed.

I’ve gone through all three scenarios. Initially I figured I didn’t need to worry about filing things, after all there wasn’t enough to worry about and most of it was stored on my hard drive. Well, a hard drive crash sorted out most of that and I got sick of shuffling through shoe boxes of paper trying to find what it was I was looking for. So I decided to sort the mess out and invested some time and money in buying lever arch files and some plastic ‘pockets’ and dividers and that worked quite well although it did leave me with a bundle of leaver arch files I had to ‘hide’ somewhere to stop the living room looking like my office desk; the joys of working from home!

Then earlier this month I moved up into the ‘premier league’ of filing. I bought a new desk from Ikea which incorporated a drawer which held suspension files. Suddenly life has gotten that little bit easier. Without getting up I pull open the drawer and flick through the tabs till I find what I’m looking for. Envelopes, receipts, catalogues, bank statements. Everything in it’s place and a place for everything. No fiddling around with plastic pockets, no unsightly mess on the floor and all it takes is a few minutes at the end of each day filing things away.

So, if you are serious about making money don’t skimp on the things that designed to help you. It may seem like an expense you can do without but remember, your time is money and if you spend twice as long looking for bits of paperwork that’s time that could be spent making money. So give your filing some thought, it can be as simple as a few shoe boxes labelled up, it can be lever arch files or it can be a ‘proper’ filing cabinet with suspension files. There are a myriad of options and it’s easy to move from one to another, once you are organised. Have a look at eBay for a second hand filing cabinet. You may be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive a small cabinet will cost you.
